From Clutter to Creation
About six years ago, I was part of a 30 day online challenge. Each individual in the group could chose their own challenge, the purpose was to have the synergy, support, time frame and momentum of the group to move us all toward our individual goals. My goal was to declutter a large 4 x 9 cedar closet that was a dumping ground for, well, all the things. This closet was entered by a flat panel dead-end door at the end of the upstairs hallway that closed away mounds of our accumulated stuff as well as the the light from the window inside, making the hall dark and closed in. I decluttered like a good “30 day challenger,” and we were deciding what to do with the space when life happened and it somehow re-filled with more stuff…out of season clothing…out grown shoes… books, you name it. This process happened over and over; clean it out and muse over plan for space while it ultimately refilled.
About four years ago, I hired a life coach, she led me through a practice where I identified my favorite room in the house and the least favorite. This closet was hands down, my least favorite. She asked me to describe how it made me feel. “Stuffed, ashamed, disorganized, cramped, wasteful.” My favorite room was the family room, which still makes me feel, “creative, happy, unique, comfortable and welcoming.” I summed it up by saying, “It feels like a really good hug.” This activity has nothing to do with decluttering things, but it helped me to realize what feelings I wanted to create more of in my life.
Last Fall, when I decided to start life coaching full time, Brad, (AKA best-friend-man, or BFM for short) offered to renovate the closet into an office for me if I would…clean it out. Yes, it was still full of stuff. Like most of us, I can ignore things for a long time, until necessity, being the mother of invention pushes me toward growth, newness, possibility. The decision of what to do with my time, also sealed the decision of what to do with this space, and we were off. In one day and three trips to the Good Will I emptied the space and the demolition began. Now I am coaching clients and creating programs from my own office that feels warm, creative, productive, unique, organized, welcoming, and a touch magical. This transformation started with creating space, but the empty space without a purpose couldn’t last, refilling repeatedly with that stuffed, ashamed, disorganized, cramped, wasteful feeling. UGH! WHO WANTS MORE OR THAT??? When a purpose emerged for the space, actual change happened, both inside and out. Now my office feels like another “really good hug,” for me, my family, for my clients, even for my viewers on facebook.
