Get naked with your yoga mat

My yoga mat and I have an intimate relationship. We’ve been together for over 11 years through way more than 500 hours of yoga teacher trainings and over 5000 hours of teaching. Yoga in hotel rooms, on the beach, in the woods, in the rain, by the pool, in the grass, in 3 of my different living rooms and countless studios just to name a few of the places we’ve gone together. I love my yoga mat. So many moments of meditation and moving into new territory body, mind and spirit have been spent on this mat. It has become like a friend.

“Wait, wait, Lori, you said, naked.” Are you wondering if I am about to announce a new class addition to the schedule? Hot Naked Yoga maybe?

Nah, not my speed, I’m suggesting you get naked with your yoga mat to clean it. Once weekly or bi-weekly, depending on frequency of use, (here comes the naked part) shower with your yoga mat. It is an easy way to spray it down thoroughly, and give it a scrub. Usually simple apply cider vinegar and give it a rub down or use a brush if needed. Have a beach towel ready to roll it up in afterward to transport from the shower to the outdoors for a good dry in the sun. To freshen up in between, spray down with mat spray and wipe clean after each use. (Simplest mat spray recipe below.) Be careful not to roll it up while it is still damp.

This blog could’ve been titled, “Does your yoga mat smell like feet?” but what fun is that?
